  • Articulation to the Graduate Diploma and Masters level in Astronomy.
  • Wide choice of subjects ranging from introductory to the more advanced areas of modern astronomy.

Course Description

This program covers the fundamental concepts and ‘big questions’ of modern astronomy, in order to equip students with a good overall understanding and general knowledge about modern astronomy, rather than training as a professional astronomer. The Graduate Certificate provides units of study suitable for members of the general public who wish to obtain an overview of astronomy and, on completion, have the option of continuing more advanced studies at the Graduate Diploma or Masters level.

Aims and Objectives

To provide both general interest units of study, emphasising conceptual astronomy and forming a general introduction to the field, plus units which involve a more detailed study of aspects of modern astronomy and assuming familiarity with introductory, tertiary-level mathematics and physics.

Entrance Requirements

A previous degree in any discipline from a recognised tertiary institution or approved equivalent.

Applicants who do not have a degree will need to show substantial relevant experience. Some applicants may need to undertake a telephone interview to discuss experience and or knowledge in astronomy.

Program Structure

The Graduate Certificate involves the completion of 4 subjects. Students undertake studies via Internet, newsgroup discussions and assignments and project work.

Entry is possible in both semester 1 (February) and Semester 2 (July).
