Research Higher Degrees in ICT (PhD and Masters)
Are you a graduate with an interest in research?
Swinburne qualifications are highly regarded and research positions are prized by the academic community. If you can demonstrate a high standard of academic achievement and want to pursue a research degree, the Faculty of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) offers Masters by Research and Doctor of Philosophy programs.
The Faculty of ICT at Swinburne is host to four of the key University research centres, which provide the focal points of research in the Faculty. These are:
- Centre for Advanced Internet Architectures
- Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing
- Centre for Complex Software Systems and Services
- Centre for Molecular Simulation
- Centre for Software Analysis and Testing
What qualifications will you need?
To qualify for candidature for a higher degree by research, you must have completed at least four years (or equivalent) of tertiary education studies at a high level of achievement. The Faculty of ICT will consider applicants with the following qualifications:
- a four year degree;
- a three year degree and Honours year (minimum Honours 2A);
- a three year degree and one year of a Masters by coursework;
- a three year course and one year of a Masters preliminary or other qualifying program; or
- a three year degree and a postgraduate diploma
How do you apply for a Research Degree with the Faculty of ICT?
A Research Degree can be commenced at any time during the year. To apply for a Research Degree you should:
1. Decide on a research
topic.
Prepare a 150 - 200 word outline of
the proposed research topic that you would like to
undertake.This outline will need to be attached to
your application upon submission.
2. Talk with a researcher from one of our
Centres.

below. Your enquiry will be forwarded to a person in
your area of research interest.
3. Submit an application for admission.
With your application you will need to supply certified copies of:
- evidence of prior degree completion (specifically demonstrating research background)
- academic transcripts
- resume of any relevant work experience
You will also need to show evidence of satisfactory language requirements if English is not your first language. Please see Swinburne International for further information about language requirements.

Following submission, your application will be reviewed by the Faculty of ICT. If your application meets our criteria it will be forwarded to Swinburne Research for consideration by the University Higher Degrees Committee. You will be contacted in due course.
