Honours Courses in ICT

Overview

The Honours courses are intended to provide students with the opportunity to pursue their undergraduate studies to an advanced level, to deepen their intellectual understanding in their major field and to develop their research skills.

An Honours course is a recognised point of entry into postgraduate research studies. Students concentrate on their chosen major area, gaining a better understanding and practicing appropriate research techniques. The requirement to complete research for their thesis ensures that honours graduates develop their abilities to conceptualise problems, devise research strategies and carry out individual research work under the supervision of a member of staff with expertise in the area.

For students wishing to seek employment following their Honours degree, the course affords the opportunity to extend their knowledge of information technology and to specialise in an area within it. The course's orientation instructs students in the principles and techniques of research and prepares them for areas of professional employment in which conceptual, organisational and research skills are in demand.

Requirements for applicants

Deadline for applications 15 Jan 2010 (early applications encouraged).

Students are strongly advised to have a research topic agreed with a supervisor BEFORE putting in an application.

Students who have an average of 80+ over the last two years will automatically receive a $6000 scholarships

 

Admissions

To be eligible for admission to the Honours course, a student must have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement overall and an excellent academic record in their chosen major study.

A student who has successfully completed a Bachelors degree from Swinburne University of Technology or another recognised university (or equivalent). The student will normally have achieved a distinction average or better in subjects related to their area of specialisation.

 

Course Structure

An Honours year will normally require one year of full-time study. Students enrol in an equivalent of 8 subjects:  4 coursework subjects and an Honours thesis which is the equivalent of 4 subjects.

The Honours year structure is as follows:

Honours Research Project

(50 credit points).
ICT research areas are listed on the Faculty of ICT Research page. Once you have decided on a research topic collaboration will take place with your supervisor and is then approved by the Honours Program Manager.

Honours research projects are also available through the following groups:

  • Usability & Innovation Group (UIG)
  • Research into Information Systems in Organisations (RISO)

Coursework

(50 credit points)
HIT4010 Research Methods
(12½ credit points)
and
Elective subjects (S1, S2, S3)
( 12½ credit points each)

At least two honours subjects must be Level 3 postgraduate level (HIT8xxx or equivalent) or the Honours Reading Subject HIT4020. At most one of the three honours subjects can be an advanced undergraduate level subject (HIT3xxx). These subjects are chosen in collaboration with the supervisor and approved by the honours program manager.
